Gentamicin
Indications/Uses
Urinary tract, GIT, & resp tract infections; meningitis & myelitis; infectious lesion, skin burn & blister w/ infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
3-5 mg/kg daily inj every other day or as prescribed. IM Divided into 2 inj w/ the same dose. Adult weighing 40-80 kg 2-4 mL daily. Childn weighing 15-40 kg 1-2 mL daily. Patients w/ gonorrhea Single dose of 240-280 mg. IV Same as IM dose. 1 mg/mL conc administered over 1-2 hr infusion. May be given in 5% dextrose or normal saline soln in 100-200 mL rate.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Discontinue treatment in case of SJS symptoms eg, fever & red rash, blister & peeling of skin & mucous membranes; rash or cold-like symptom. Not to be used in patients recently treated w/ kanamaycin or streptomycin. May damage auditory system & cause deafness & hearing loss. History of hypersensitivity. Not to use concomitantly w/ strong diuretics. Impaired renal function. Avoid during pregnancy. Not to be used in newborns. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity.
Drug Interactions
Increased ototoxicity w/ diuretics & other aminogylcosides eg, kanamycin, streptomycin.
